Was that all about? For those of you who weren't in Professor Raz's dueling session this afternoon, Millie and Daphne had some kind of row that ended with Daphs in a fury and Millie's face all purple and bulging. It looked she'd been dipped in a pot of porphyry fruit jam. Ugh, hopefully there won't be any porphyry tarts at supper tonight. I don't think I could stomach them after that.

I'm dead confused, I don't mind saying. Is this some kind of pent-up Yule Ball aggression coming out? Daphs can be a pretty wicked duelist but she's typically more controlled than that, and certainly pretty forgiving of Millie - no matter what she does.

But it must have started earlier. Did you see Daphs wrote her a PM? And then all through Potions Millie looked like she was just fuming. Or worrying. It's hard to tell with her face. Harder now, though!

Seriously. I guess they might have been fighting about something and it all came to a head while dueling? Who knows what, but women can be unpredictable.

You don't reckon that Bole is rubbing off on Daphs already, do you? He's got that temper about him, makes him a brilliant beater but a bit of a boiling cauldron, too. That'd be a shame, seeing as Daphs is usually so civil.

True enough. Millicent more than Daphne, though. Usually.

I don't see how he really could have rubbed off on her much. It's not as if they've spent much time together so far as I know. Possibly, though, she wanted to do something to get his attention. Beyond asking out of the blue if he'd escort her to the ball, that is.

I don't think we need to worry that she's after any long-running association with Bole, though. It's simply an experiment.

I don't follow you. Who asks someone to the ball as an experiment?

Well, he's a certain type of character, Bole. A different sort than she's experienced before in this sort of way. I must say I was a bit surprised she didn't choose one of the visiting fellows, but if you look at it from another angle, it makes good sense. The Ball is a one of a kind event. Bole needn't expect she's any interest in him beyond it, which makes it perfectly grand as a trial. And, of course, if he impresses her, she might decide to see him again. But she won't be obliged if she's not interested.

I mean to say, I've asked Margaux Durand for the same sort of reason: she's provincial, from the Dordogne, and her father's in trade. Well, he's a glass-crafter. In any case, talking with her expands my range, you see?

Daphs and I think it important to sample what the world has to offer, rather than always sticking with what's well-known and comfortable. And this year is going to be full of opportunities to stretch ourselves a bit.

He's a character, all right. An intense one. Beast on the field, and off.

Though rather makes sense, now that I think back to her odd yet profound admiration for Crouch Jr.

So she did a casting call for the part and decided Bole was the one to best fit the costume. And he'll be gone after this year, just like the visitors will.

Well, I can't say it's not amusing to watch what you two get up to, anyway.

Merlin knows we've all wanted to hex Milli a few times, but that was so completely unlike Daphne I'm a bit worried about her.

Even when she loses her temper it's normally a bit more ... controlled, I guess? You know, she'll decide to lose her temper to make a point and show she's serious.

And there was nothing wrong this morning, so far as I noticed. Daphne was a little irritable but who isn't when they've just got up?

I was just asking Blaise if he thinks Bole might be having an effect on her. Merlin knows his mood can flip on a knut. But then they've only just recently started spending time together, haven't they?

Yeah, as far as I know they'd never spent much time together before she announced they were going together to the Yule Ball.

I suppose it might be his influence. Maybe she's always seemed steadier before because she was spending time with Blaise?

Possibly. I mean, she's always sort of prided herself on being the only "adult" in the room, but I never thought it was something she picked up from Blaise.

Well, you and Pansy will do your best not to set her off, I'm sure.

Draco, it's so sweet of you to be concerned. Millie and I just got utterly caught up in the heat of the duel, I'm afraid. There was nothing personal meant by it at all! I think it could be that we're both about to have our, well, you know... and feeling a little off-keel and tempermental as a result.
