A little helpful service

Since I reckon a few blokes are going to be feeling a bit regretful that they took so long to open up their eyes to the fact that dancing is neither naff nor poncy, I figure it might be helpful if we compiled a list of people who are still without a date, just to make it easier for them to find one another, if they so choose.

Because get this: dancing with a girl is actually the opposite of poncy, as it so happens.

Milli would very much like to go with Greg, if he'd ask her. She doesn't want to do the asking. (Pansy tried to drop a hint but you know how Greg is. If she'd wrapped the hint around a brick and dropped it on his foot it might have worked a bit better.)

Anyway if you have a chance to shove Greg in that direction I'm sure Milli would appreciate it.

I'll see if I can bludgeon some sense into Greg, but unfortunately he's under the influence of Vince, who's currently touting Smith's whole "dancing is for shirt-lifters" philosophy.

I don't know what's wrong with some boys. You're right, dancing with a girl (when you're a boy) is about the last poncy thing ever.

I reckon it depends on background and how you were raised. My parents went to dances and balls all the time when I was growing up, and I had to take classes in etiquette and deportment, which included dancing lessons. So it never seemed like a poncy sort of activity to me, not when men like my Father and the Lestrange brothers and Ari Baddock did it and seemed to enjoy it, too.

So Weasley, well, I reckon it makes sense he's never been exposed to that sort of thing. I'm more surprised about Smith, though.

Teddy wanted to ask Hydra, did you know that? He was annoyed that Finch-Fletchley beat him to it. Or he seemed annoyed at first, but then he recovered right fast. It's hard to really get a peg on what Teddy cares about, sometimes. I don't see how anyone can really "make up" a date, though. There's not that many people in the school - unless they're counting on the foreigners to make things confusing and difficult to keep straight.

About Smith, I'd doubt it. He's pureblooded, but not in the cultured Wiltshire way. More in the "hole up in the North country and listen to quidditch on the wireless and drink lager" way.

No. He kind of gave her a weird look a couple of times, but she's stayed well away from him. And she's agreed she'll tell me if he tries anything. But he hasn't.

Ron Weasley, Zacharias Smith, Linus Moon, Seamus Finnigan, Michael Corner, Gregory Goyle, Vincent Crabbe, and Theodore Nott - what's wrong with you? Even if you don't have a sense of romance or one jot of rhythm, couldn't you at least look at the Ball as a school-wide event in which we are playing hosts to our foreign guests? From that angle, isn't it wise if you at least make an effort?

This is just like the play all over again.

I suppose Linus Moon and Theodore Nott deserve a little credit for at least having asked girls who already happened to have dates, and thus had to turn them down.

Oh, how nice for Morag to have two boys after her! She used to be convinced that she was clumsy and unattractive. (And, well, she's still clumsy, although she's getting better. But she was always pretty.)

Well, neither Moon nor Carmichael are the most fetching too look at, but they're both very nice, even if Moon can be sort of gormless, especially for someone who gets good marks. Still, Eddie's a fifth year, so good for her!

I did a little asking about after you posted this.

I'm not sure who Delacour's going with, no one in Beauxbatons seems to know. Archimbault's asked Anderson, just last night. Toubon means to ask Calderwood, I think. I'm pretty sure everyone else from Beauxbatons has dates.

Oh, and someone said this morning that Poliakoff and Tupolov are still looking for girls to ask. Poliakoff might have better luck if he'd make sure he hasn't spilled something on his robes before asking anyone.

And if any boys are looking for girls, I heard Katla Knopf is still available. If you dare to ask her!

Is that really all the foreigners who are left? That still leaves a lot Hogwarts students without dates, but then I suppose if they just ask each other, problem solved.

Knopf is the one who looks like she could be Goyle's cousin or something. I swear she might have been able to swim here on her own if they hadn't had a ship.

And I guess a couple of them were already dating (like Ivanovich and Alexandrova) and there's at least one pair where one of them is from Durmstrang and the other from Beauxbatons.

I think Evgeni might still be waiting to figure out who to ask as well.

But after all there's only a week to go, or nearly!
