Keeping busy

Went for a fly this morning for the first time in some weeks. I must say that while this year has been packed with new and interesting activities, I really do miss quidditch. I especially feel for the 7th years who were looking forward to playing out their final season, only to discover that they'd already played it back in 6th year. Bit rubbish, that. But I suppose it can't be helped.

Seems a few folks are still feeling a bit low that they've not been invited to that Beauxbatons soiree. All I can say to that is: really? It's just a bit of faculty-supervised tea and mingling, not the second coming of the Yule Ball. I can't speak for other Houses, but there's usually more interesting things than that going on in the Slytherin common room on Saturday nights. Dancing in the music alcove, or even just listening to the wireless, along with snap and portkey at the game tables. So if you're feeling left out, just grab a mate and make something happen.

Off to the YPL/CCF Planning meeting in a bit. See the rest of you lot there.

If you're talking about me, I'm not low and my feelings aren't hurt. I just didn't understand the thinking behind who was invited and who wasn't. That's all.

The guest list makes perfect sense if you think about it the right way. It includes a number of hopelessly inept wallflower types and a very small handful of semi-popular types who happen to be good at reaching out to hopelessly inept wallflower types. Sounds like a nightmare if you ask me, and you should be happy you're not expected to show up.

Well no, she wouldn't then, would she?

But it does explain why people like Midgen and Smith and Millicent weren't invited. They might be pretty inept at socialising, but you can't really call them wallflowers. They ought to have left Weasley out of it, though. He's more irritating than Smith and Midgen combined.

Doesn't need me to do things, does he? He has Granger as a built-in best mate who has to stick by his side no matter what, and can't really ever disagree with him in any way that really matters - no matter how much he likes to think otherwise.

When we were little, I was given to Harry as his best mate.

And then when we came to Hogwarts they gave him Granger.

I don't know whose idea it was. His Father's, I suppose. Maybe it was after Harry was sorted into Gryffindor. He must've realised Harry would care more about keeping a mudblood girl out of trouble than he would a boy who was almost his equal.

Do you think you and Harry would have been mates, if you hadn't been given to him? If you'd just met him like one meets any other person?

Draco, Harry doesn't want anyone to get into trouble, not you and not Granger. But you aren't as vulnerable as she is, you must know that.

He might feel more than that, even. Though he's an idiot if he does.

I used to tell myself that we would have been friends no matter what. But I'm not as sure of that as I used to be. I like him, of course, but we're so different from one another in some ways. The differences are starting to show up more than they used to.

Of course I know it. It was brilliant, really, giving him Granger. He'd do almost anything to keep her safe.

Differences can be good. If you were only friends with people who were just like you, you'd never learn anything, or change and grow.

I suppose you must resent her a little. I wouldn't blame you if you did.

I see you point, but just the same... I don't feel like changing and growing. Not just now, at least. I want to play portkey and have a laugh, just because I can.

I don't resent her at all, actually. She's got no say in any of it.

I resent HIM. I can acknowledge that it's not exactly fair, but I can't make the feeling go away, either. No matter how many early mornings I spend flying.

But I think you know me well enough to know that I have zero interest in it, myself. To say nothing of how Odd Begy smells more strongly of cabbage than actual cabbage does, and I'd rather spare my nose the reminder.

Of course!

And we did have a good time. I rather had to take on the role of hostess, because I knew the most people there, and some were so awfully shy with one another, or didn't know how to say anything in French, but it did feel rather nice to be a help to Professor Sinistra, and it was worth it to have the chance to talk to some of the Beauxbatons girls that I haven't really had the chance to otherwise.

I figured you were probably invited for the hostessing bit. You're good at it, after all.

I was actually trying to avoid the common room, but now that I know you're out I'll meet you there in 20 minutes or so? You can tell me what I missed.
